A car dash cam captured dramatic video Wednesday evening as an out-of-control vehicle went airborne — flying across six lanes of Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore — in a scene straight out of "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Smokey and the Bandit" or the playbook of the late daredevil Evel Knievel.
But it wasn't the General Lee or even a Pontiac TransAm.
Suffolk County Police said it was a 70-year-old man in a 2012 Honda.
According to the police account, the Honda was southbound on Richland Boulevard around 5 p.m. when the driver drove through the westbound service road, collided with a guardrail and traveled up an embankment. His Honda catapulted across the westbound and eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway before crashing into a guardrail and a stand of trees on the eastbound side. The vehicle left the roadway in Bay Shore and landed in Brightwaters.
Police said the driver, whose name was not released, was transported to South Shore University hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was the lone occupant of the car.
Though it was the start of the evening rush hour, no other cars were struck or involved in the incident.
