W. Babylon man faces DWI charge
A West Babylon man who was speeding and straying out of his lane Tuesday on the Southern State Parkway in North Babylon faces a felony drunken-driving charge, State Police said.
Troopers stopped Williams L. Mahecha, 36, west of Exit 38, Belmont Lake State Park, at about 8:30 p.m. for allegedly driving 80 mph in a posted 55-mph zone and failing to maintain his lane, police said.
Troopers said in a news release that "further investigation revealed Mahecha to be intoxicated."
He was arrested and refused a breath-analyzer test, troopers said.
Mahecha is charged with driving while intoxicated, a felony because of a previous drunken-driving conviction in the past 10 years, police said. He also is charged with felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and other traffic violations.
Mahecha is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
