Warren K. Booth III stole money from scholarship fund honoring 9/11 victim, cops say

A Hampton Bays man who stole $50,000 from a scholarship fund created in honor of a victim of the 911 terror attacks surrendered to police Thursday, authorities said.

Warren K. Booth III, 51, acting as the fund’s administrator, stole the money from the Arthur J. Jones III Scholarship Fund, founded to honor a 1982 graduate of Hampton Bays High School, Southampton Town police said.

Booth, charged with grand larceny and held overnight, removed the money from August 2010 to the present, police said.

He was arraigned Friday morning at Southampton Justice Court.

He was released on his own recognizance.

According to a Facebook page for the scholarship fund, it was established by Jones’ friends and family with a nod to his athletic background.

The fund, created in 2002, is awarded each year to a male and female basketball player from the senior class at Hampton Bays High School.

“The winners may or may not be the most outstanding players on the team, but it is the Committee’s hope that they be the most well-rounded,” the page said.
