A 48-year-old Water Mill woman was arrested just after midnight Thursday and charged with driving while intoxicated with a 5-year-old in the car, Southampton Town police said.

Caroline A. Evans was stopped at 12:19 a.m. on Upper Seven Ponds Road near Old Mill Road in Water Mill after police said her four-door Honda sedan failed to maintain its travel lane. Police said she was found to be intoxicated.

Because Evans had a child in the car, police said they charged her under Leandra's Law.

Evans was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, as well as with endangering the welfare of a child and failure to maintain her lane. She was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Leandra's Law is named for Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old girl who was killed when her friend's mother, Carmen Huertas, drove drunk, flipping a van carrying girls from a sleepover party on the Henry Hudson Parkway. Six other children were injured in the crash.

The law was enacted last year and makes it a felony to drive drunk with anyone in the vehicle age 15 years or younger - even on the first offense.
