A Shoreham-Wading River student worked to put the "happy" in birthdays for children at Stony Brook Children's Hospital.

Alexis Biemer, a senior at the high school, recently collected 30 baskets worth of birthday supplies that were delivered to the hospital's Child Life Program. The items, which included everything from tablecloths to wall decorations, were donated by different troops in her Girl Scout service unit, Biemer said.

"I'm interested in working with kids one day, so I thought this would be a good jump start," said Biemer, 17, whose mother is a physical therapist at the hospital. "I wanted to put a smile on their faces. If I was in the hospital for my birthday, I would want the same thing."

In addition to the supplies, Biemer built and painted a large storage box using materials donated by local stores. The box is being used to store the birthday supplies for upcoming celebrations at the hospital.

Biemer undertook the project as part of the community service component for her Gold Award, which is considered the highest achievement for a Girl Scout.

She is a member of her school's National Honor Society, Yearbook Club and varsity track and softball teams. She also is involved in Nexus, a community service club at the school.
