Second-grader Mason Batz turned a lemonade stand into something very fruitful for kids with cancer.

The student at Daniel Street Elementary School in Lindenhurst, who was diagnosed last year with leukemia, recently raised $2,000 by running a lemonade stand at his grandmother's house on Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst.

The money will be used to send a child and his or her family to Camp Sunshine in Maine, which Mason attended last summer thanks to a sponsorship from the Steven M. Perez Foundation in Melville. Camp offerings include family support groups, recreational activities such as talent and magic shows and dance parties.

"Mason decided on the drive home that he would like to raise money to send a child and their family to the camp since it was such a wonderful experience for us," said his mother, Jeanine. "It's nice to be in a place where other people understand exactly what you're going through."

To attract a crowd, the Batz family promoted the fundraiser on Facebook and spread the word to co-workers. Visitors donated varying sums for a glass of lemonade and a chocolate chip cookie. "I was really happy," Mason said of the amount raised. "I want to do this every year."
