Samuel Noack, a home-schooled seventh-grader from East Islip, was recently named one of the nation's brightest young students at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted kids coordinated by Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth in Baltimore.

To earn the honor, Noack participated last summer in the center's 2011 Talent Search by taking tests designed for older students: the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) and a test that gauges the understanding of spatial relationships among objects.

On the latter, he scored a 700 and was one of three students to earn a Spatial Ability Award last month at the ceremony at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus. A score of 600 or better is deemed exceptional.

"For me, it was extremely easy," said Noack, 13. "I consider this a good achievement."

Noack said he took the same spatial test last year and scored a 690, which qualified him for one of the center's summer programs. There he later earned a $2,000 college scholarship.

He also was on a local team named Peaced Together that finished 23rd earlier this year at the FIRST Lego League's 2011 World Festival in St. Louis. In his spare time, he plays in the Little League of the Islips.
