Way to Go: Victoria Goldfader, East Islip
Victoria Goldfader, of East Islip Middle School, received the President's Volunteer Service Award based on hundreds of hours of community service she has performed.
An East Islip eighth-grader has gotten national-level recognition for her volunteer work.
Victoria Goldfader, of East Islip Middle School, received the President's Volunteer Service Award based on hundreds of hours of community service she has performed. She was presented with an award certificate and a letter from President Barack Obama at a celebratory breakfast held Feb. 26 at the middle school.
Goldfader said her favorite effort was helping to raise $6,000 to pay for a disabled classmate's wish to swim with dolphins. The money was raised through a school movie night, gift basket raffles and bracelet sales.
"He's a friend of mine, and I really wanted him to fulfill his dream," said Goldfader, 13. Of community service, she said: "It's always been in my blood."
Her other volunteer efforts include participating in a school toy drive and in "Snowflakes for Sandy Hook," a program in which she cut out paper snowflakes to decorate a new school for children who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
She also volunteers at For the Kids Foundation in East Islip and Brighter Tomorrow, a domestic-violence shelter in Shirley.
Goldfader is vice president of Student Council and a member of the National Junior Honor Society.
