Long Islanders endured seven snowstorms in January alone: Get ready for February to kick off with another one.

The National Weather Service this morning has issued a winter storm warning for most of Long Island with a weather advisory issued for Suffolk County's North Shore, which lasts until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters call for 2 to 4 inches of snow, and up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation.

Meteorologist Davis Stark said snowfall beginning early Tuesday would give way to a mix of sleet and snow at sunrise. Forecasters said light snow and sleet would turn to "a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain" Tuesday, turning to all rain Wednesday.

"Travel will be impacted," the weather service warned.

The Long Island Power Authority is increasing staffing Tuesday and Wednesday and will have repair crews on standby, a spokeswoman said.

The Long Island Rail Road plans to operate a normal morning rush, according to a statement, but advised customers to listen to announcements for delays and be wary of slippery conditions at the stations.

The metropolitan area has had three major snowstorms this winter - including a blizzard Dec. 26 and 27.

The nearly 35 inches of snow that fell on Long Island in two storms in January made it the Island's snowiest month ever, forecasters said.

The weather service said Tuesday's high should rise to near freezing. Sunshine should return Thursday, with a chance of snow Friday, it said.
