Westbound LIE reopens after crash during commute, police say

A five-vehicle crash during Wednesday’s morning commute closed all westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway in Suffolk County for more than 90 minutes, police said.

The crash at 8:15 a.m. stopped traffic between Exit 59 in Ronkonkoma and Exit 58 in Islandia, according to the state Department of Transportation website.

Three lanes of the expressway reopened about 9:50 a.m., according to the site; the high occupancy vehicle lane remained closed until about 11:15 a.m.

A police spokeswoman said Highway Patrol officers responded to the westbound LIE at Exit 59 after a van had struck two vehicles simultaneously and then “two other vehicles were involved in the collision.”

One woman was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, and another was treated for a minor injury, the spokeswoman said.

During the 90-minute closure, traffic cameras on the LIE showed the crash backing up westbound traffic for several miles.
