A driver got out of her car after hitting barriers on both sides of the westbound Long Island Expressway in Brentwood Tuesday, then collapsed on the highway, Suffolk police said.

She was taken to Southside Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver lost control of her Hyundai Accent on the LIE near the Sagtikos State Parkway and hit a concrete barrier in the median just before noon, police said.

Her car ricocheted backward, was clipped by a westbound pickup truck, then slammed into the steel guardrail between the highway and the service road, police said.

The driver, 47, got out of her car and started walking, but then collapsed, police said. The driver of the pickup was not injured, police said.

Officers are looking into whether a vehicle malfunction played a role in the crash, police said.

Police shut down the westbound LIE for about 90 minutes between exits 51 and 53. The lanes reopened at about 1:40 p.m.
