Westbury man faces 4 years after car crash
A Westbury man faces at least four years in prison after admitting he caused a Ronkonkoma car crash in which his teenage son suffered a head injury.
Edward Langley, 34, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Suffolk County Court to second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and other charges after smashing his Volvo into a tree at the corner of Pine and Woodlawn avenues in December.
Judge Martin Efman said he would sentence Langley on Sept. 28 to 4 years in prison and 5 years of probation.
Prosecutors will ask Efman to sentence Langley to 5 years in prison, said Robert Clifford, a spokesman for District Attorney Thomas Spota.
Langley was fleeing a sheriff's deputy when the crash occurred, authorities have said. The deputy had pursued Langley after his ex-girlfriend called 911 and said Langley was following her on the Long Island Expressway, according to the sheriff's office.
Langley's son, Edward Langley III, 14, suffered a serious head wound in the crash. The boy is fully recovered, the elder Langley's attorney, Philip Murphy of Bay Shore, said. Langley fled the deputy because he was driving without a license, Murphy said.
The sheriff's office has said Langley did not stop or slow down when he saw a deputy was pursuing him. The pursuit of Langley lasted about three minutes before the crash, authorities have said.
Langley remains in jail on $100,000 bail.
