The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Long Island, to be in effect from 3 a.m. Saturday until midnight.

Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, gusting to 45 to 55 mph - and possibly near 60 mph - are expected after midnight through Saturday evening, forecasters said.

There is the potential for downed tree limbs causing scattered power outages, the weather service warned. Forecasters urged residents to secure lightweight items including garbage cans and construction materials.

A wind advisory is issued "when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph - or gusts of 46 to 57 mph - are expected or occurring," the weather service said in a special weather statement.

On Friday, temperatures were spring like, approaching the 60s. The South Shore will see temperatures in the lower 50s "due to the influence of the very cool ocean," forecasters said.

Temperatures will fall into the mid 30s as a cold front passes through toward the evening. Saturday temperatures will average around 30 degrees colder than Friday, with the gusting winds making it feel like in the lower 20s, even the teens.
