A 78-year-old woman was seriously injured when the 87-year-old driver of the car she was riding in lost control of the vehicle causing a three-car collision Sunday on Route 347 in Lake Grove, police said.

The Smithtown woman, whose identity was not released by Suffolk County police, was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center in critical condition following the crash at 2:32 p.m.

The driver, Joseph Abdenour, of Smithtown, and two people in a Mercedes that he hit also were taken to Stony Brook, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police said two people in a third car were not injured.

Police said the crash occurred as Abdenour was driving his 2000 Toyota eastbound on Route 347 and lost control — crossing over into the westbound lane, where he struck a 2010 Mercedes waiting to turn onto Moriches Road.

The Mercedes then struck a 2010 Honda also waiting to make the turn onto Moriches.

Police said all three vehicles were impounded for safety checks and said the investigation was continuing.
