A woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center Wednesday morning suffering from serious second- and third-degree burns to more than 25 percent of her body following a house fire in Sayville, officials said.

The identity of the woman was not immediately known, Suffolk County police said.

Community Ambulance Company of Sayville chief Jamie Atkinson said emergency services technicians were dispatched to the call on Lincoln Avenue at 8:51 a.m. and by the time medics and firefighters from the Sayville Fire Department arrived one minute later, the fire had been was extinguished.

However, Atkinson said, emergency personnel found the woman had suffered burns to her chest, face, airway and extremities - and immediately applied burn sheets to prevent hypothermia and infection and "secured her unstable airway" as they waited for the medical helicopter to arrive.

Atkinson described the burns as "serious."

Police said the aviation unit landed at a nearby middle school on Johnson Avenue.
