Woman charged with DWI after hitting tree
A 70-year-old Westhampton woman crashed into a tree Monday evening in Hampton Bays, suffering facial injuries, then was arrested by police who responded to the scene and charged with drunken driving.
Southampton Town police said Barbara Cooper was operating her vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
She was charged with DWI and held for arraignment Tuesday morning in Southampton Town Justice Court.
Police said Cooper crashed at about 10 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Rampasture Road and Elder Avenue. Police said the vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree.
Officers who responded to the scene said Cooper complained of facial injuries caused by the air bags.
She was treated at the scene by volunteers from Hampton Bays Ambulance, then taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where tests revealed Cooper was intoxicated, police said. She was arrested following her release.
