Suffolk's Fourth Squad detectives are investigating the crash, which took place at about 5:10 p.m. The woman was driving east on Townline Road near the intersection of Mount Pleasant Road when she lost control of her 2005 Ford, police said. It then jumped the curb and struck the pole, police said.

The woman's identify was being withheld pending notification of her family. She was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said. The car was impounded for a safety check.
