A Selden woman died early Sunday morning in a fire that Suffolk police said is not suspicious.

Marie Mahoney, 69, a resident of St. Joseph's Village Apartment Complex, 2000 Boyle Rd., was found dead in her bedroom by firefighters, police said.

A caller reported the fire to 911 about 1:30 a.m.

Detectives from the Suffolk County police homicide squad and arson section are still investigating.

"The fire appears to be noncriminal in nature," Suffolk police said.

Mahoney had one son and cared for her ailing husband until he died about a year and a half ago, her stepson, Michael Mahoney, said Sunday.

She had worked for BOCES as a substitute teacher, and enjoyed spending time with her seven stepgrandchildren, he said.

"She was a very sweet woman," Michael Mahoney said.

"She's leaving behind a lot of people who cared about her."
