Woman escapes Elwood fire unharmed
About 75 firefighters needed nearly an hour to put out a blaze at a Elwood home early Wednesday in which the lone occupant escaped unharmed, fire officials said.
Greenlawn assistant fire chief Scott Dalrymple said a fire originated in the basement of a home on Doti Court shortly after midnight.
Several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion, Dalrymple said. There were no other injuries.
The only person home at the time, a woman, escaped before firefighters arrived at the scene, Dalrymple said. "A fire alarm awakened her," he said.
The Greenlawn fire department used eight trucks and had help from the Commack, Dix Hills, Huntington Manor departments with Centerport and East Northport providing standby coverage, Dalrymple said.
No cause has been determined, but Dalrymple said the Suffolk police arson squad and the Town of Huntington fire marshal are investigating.
