A woman on the eastbound tracks of the Long Island Rail Road was hit and killed by a train Friday morning near the Sayville station, an LIRR spokesman said.

Spokesman Rich Mendelson said the eastbound train from Babylon due in Patchogue at 8:25 a.m. hit the woman on the tracks west of the Sayville station at about 8:23 a.m.

Authorities are not sure why the woman was on the tracks, he said.

No passengers were injured, he said, and Suffolk County police were notified immediately.

Commuters experienced delays of up to 90 minutes in both directions, Mendelson said. Full service was restored just before 11 a.m.
