A man who intended to rob a West Sayville bank Monday afternoon gave up after a fearful teller failed to comply with his demands, police said.

The man entered the Chase Bank at 90 Main St. at 1:15 p.m. "and handed the teller a note demanding cash and indicating he was armed," Suffolk County police said in a news release. "Due to fear, the teller did not comply with the demands."

The would-be robber "took back the note" and fled, police said.

Police investigators described the suspect as being in his mid- to late 40s with a medium build.

"He was wearing a brown, checkered flannel jacket, with a white shirt underneath, a dark colored baseball hat and dark sunglasses." police said. "He was unshaven and had a Band-Aid near his left eye."

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. Calls will remain confidential.
