A man cleaning an industrial mixer suffered serious injuries Thursday when his hand became trapped, police said.

The accident took place at Corinthian Cast Stone, Inc., on Wyandanch Avenue in Wyandanch at 4:30 p.m. Suffolk County police said the worker, Jose Hernandez, 17, of Wyandanch, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center and admitted in critical but stable condition with lacerations, broken bones, nerve and tendon damage to one hand.

Police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are conducting an investigation into the accident.

The company makes architectural cast stones for the outside of buildings.

Some of their recent projects, according to the company Web site, include producing stone for the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station, a dormitory building at the State University at Farmingdale and for the Port Authority of New York-New Jersey Waterfront Corporate Center in Hoboken.
