Wyandanch man struck by freight train survives

A Wyandanch man struck by a New York & Atlantic Railway Co. freight train near the Wyandanch station late Thursday was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, a Long Island Rail Road spokesman said.

The man, 56, was struck at about 10:10 p.m. near the 18th Street crossing, said spokesman Aaron Donovan, and taken to a nearby hospital.

Early Friday, the man was still hospitalized, Donovan said.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are investigating, Donovan said.

Police said the engineer of the freight train blew his horn and put the train into emergency brake mode in an effort to avoid the man on the tracks, Donovan said.

Service was halted for several hours but was restored before midnight.

New York & Atlantic runs its freight trains on LIRR tracks.
