An Amityville man was critically injured Tuesday night when he was struck by a car while attempting to cross Sunrise Highway on his bicycle in North Amityville, police said.

Xavier Royal, 20, was taken by Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital after the 8:30 p.m. accident at Sunrise and Bayview Avenue.

Police said Royal remained in critical condition on Wednesday morning. The extent of his injuries were not known.

Police said Royal was attempting to cross Sunrise Highway when he was struck by a westbound 2002 Chrysler Voyager being driven by Thomas Cosma, 51, of Massapequa.

Cosma was not injured and he was not charged, police said.

The minivan was impounded for a safety check and, police said, the investigation into the cause of the accident was continuing.

Police ask anyone with information about the accident to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152.
