A Lindenhurst man was struck and killed Thursday morning as he walked with a bike across Sunrise Highway in the village, the Suffolk County Police Department said.

Mariano Diaz-Pichardo, 60, was crossing the highway about 9:10 a.m. at the intersection of Buffalo Avenue when the driver of a Hino box truck struck his bike in an effort to avoid hitting him directly, Suffolk police said in a news release. Immediately following the collision, an oncoming Ford F550 struck Diaz-Pichardo.

He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the police. The drivers of the box truck and the Ford did not sustain injuries. Members of the police department’s Motor Carrier Safety Section performed safety checks on both vehicles.

Police ask anyone with information regarding the crash to call First Squad Detectives at 631-854-8152.
