Planned overnight construction Thursday on the Loop Parkway in the Town of Hempstead, allowing for steel deck replacement on Long Creek drawbridge, has been canceled, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The bridge, which runs off the Meadowbrook Parkway and Ocean Parkway at Jones Beach, is one of the primary routes to connect south Nassau County to the barrier island consisting of Point Lookout, Lido Beach, Long Beach and Atlantic Beach. Loop Parkway also serves as a major hurricane evacuation route.

Officials did not give a reason for the cancellation. The overnight closure was originally slated for 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday.

In recent years, the bridge has been frequently stuck in the upright position, posing a risk to public safety and an inconvenience for motorists.
