The widow of a beloved Long Island teacher who died surfing in Indonesia says she believes he fell off his board and hit his head on a reef.
Thirty-two-year old Daniel Bobis went missing in waters off Sumatra island last month. Fisherman found his body days later.
Initial reports indicated he had knocked boards with another surfer coming off a powerful 10-foot wave.
But in an email to The Associated Press this week, Rachel Bobis says the surfer who encountered her husband's board never saw him in the water.
Daniel Bobis was a math teacher and surf team coach at Long Beach High School. News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief in the seaside community. Friends are planning a benefit concert for his family next month.
