The Huntington crowd, which has grown to a few hundred, was buzzing with excitement and cheers as the Knicks stormed back from being down double digits in the second quarter.
Many people either brought their own food, such as tacos and pizza, or purchased items like popcorn and ice cream available to indulge.
A sizable portion of the crowd also notably booed President Donald Trump as he was shown on the Chapin Rainbow Stage’s screen.
Peter Doggett, 42, said that the Knicks’ ability to come back in games is amazing. Doggett, of Centerport, broke bones in his foot on Friday celebrating the Knicks’ Game 2 win and went to the hospital.
“Tonight in particular is fun because I haven’t broken any bones in my feet celebrating,” Doggett said.
Fans appeared anxious as they watched the final moments of Game 3 with the Knicks trailing late. Eyes locked on the big screen, watch party attendees frequently raised their arms above their heads in frustration.
As the clock expired and the Knicks lost, 115-111, fans promptly gathered their belongings and left Heckscher Park. Some people loudly chanted anti-Spurs thoughts, while a father comforted his child, saying “we got the next one.”
Lisa Fostvedt, 52, of Huntington said she was proud of the Town of Huntington for putting this event together and that she hopes more watch parties continue in the future. Fostvedt said it was a really successful way to bring together the community.
