1,200 pounds of trash collected in Selden

The first of Brookhaven Town’s six planned Operation Clean Sweep events netted 1,200 pounds of trash in a Selden neighborhood, town officials said.

Highway department, waste management and Quality of Life Task Force workers targeted the area around Pamela Lane Park from April 11 to April 18, town officials said. The town is using the events to clean up neighborhoods and issue code violations for substandard housing.

During the sweep, the workers replaced 44 street signs, swept more than 40 streets, fixed more than 40 street lamps and issued 78 code violations, town officials said. The violations included citations for unregistered vehicles and litter on properties, officials said, adding that 20 homeowners received court appearance tickets and 58 agreed to correct the violation.

Supervisor Mark Lesko described the effort as “giving the neighborhood a makeover.”

The town has scheduled an Operation Clean Sweep in each town council district. The next event will take place in May in the First District, which includes Port Jefferson, Stony Brook and the Setaukets.
