$10.4M bond passes to renovate Great Neck Public Library

Voters, by a nearly 2-1 ratio, have approved a $10.4 million bond referendum to renovate the main branch of the Great Neck Public Library.

The referendum Tuesday was approved 940-514.

About half of the bond will be used to improve the infrastructure of the Bayview Avenue building, which hasn’t been renovated since it was built in 1970.

The other half of the bond will pay for upgrades inside the library, including moving the community room, expanding reading areas and creating a children’s room downstairs, complete with its own checkout area, library officials said.

Construction is estimated to take less than a year, according to library officials. During that time, the main branch will be closed and hours will be increased at the system’s three branch libraries.

The referendum took place two years after voters rejected a $20.8 million bond referendum that would have been used to renovate and expand the library.
