15 months expected for Syosset roadwork

Residents affected by the reconstruction of busy Jackson Avenue in Syosset learned Wednesday that they can expect 15 months of daytime work, and few — if any — total road closures.

Town of Oyster Bay officials held an information meeting on the long-awaited project, which covers about one mile from just north of Jericho Turnpike to the railroad tracks. Construction will be broken into three phases to limit inconvenience, they told the roughly 100 people at the meeting at Syosset High School.

Known for potholes, poor drainage, no sidewalks and a dangerous curve, Jackson Avenue had been slated for federal funds obtained through Nassau County, but that money fell through in 2009. Last year, town leaders worked with the county to take control of the road stretch in question and move the project forward.

Nassau has since committed $3 million to the total cost.

The 18-month construction contract, including new paving, new sidewalks and turning lanes, was awarded at just under $4 million.
