Long Island-based Holiday Organization has donated $1 million and nearly 100 acres of land in Shirley to Brookhaven Town to be used for recreational purposes.

The land, which includes a 6.5-acre park, is on the former Links golf course site at 333 William Floyd Parkway in Shirley and will be used for natural park land.

The Holiday Organization, which builds homes and residential communities, donated 98.8 acres — nearly half of the 205 acres it owns at the site — as part of the application process to build two housing developments.

Town officials said the organization went beyond Brookhaven’s requirements for “community benefits” as part of such applications.

Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico said lighting and a walkway could be constructed around the lake.

“I’m most proud of this since being on the council,” Panico said. “We can turn this into a central location, and the community will have a sense of place.”

The Holiday Organization is planning to construct the Colony Preserve condominiums on the site adjacent to the property.

The condominiums offer two residential choices: The Manors, which include 150 units of luxury condominium living for adults older than 55, and The Country Woods, consisting of 75 single-family homes.

The $1 million donation will fund a recreational facility at the site.
