2 hurt as car plunges down elevator shaft

Call it an Upper East Side miracle.
A parking attendant survived Tuesday after driving a car into an elevator shaft and plunging five stories.
The Lexus RX 350 landed upside down atop an elevator sitting on the first floor. A man in the elevator also survived the accident at 76th Street and First Avenue.
Both men were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries after the 9:45 a.m. accident, said an FDNY spokesman. The cause of the accident was being investigated.
The 65 firefighters who responded to the six-story parking garage with a Hertz Rent A Car on ground level used the Jaws of Life to tear off the SUV's door and rescue the driver, who was not identified. The man in the elevator, Angel Rosa, managed to walk out on his own, an FDNY spokesman said. A hospital spokesman would not confirm reports Rosa had been released.
A FDNY spokesman said car's owner wasn't known.
