The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened two disaster recovery centers in Suffolk and Nassau counties to provide information about assistance in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene.

Federal specialists will staff the centers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Friday. The offices of Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano also announced the openings.

The centers will be

located at:

Mitchel Athletic Complex, 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd.

in Uniondale.

The H. Lee Dennison Building, 100 Veterans Memorial Hwy.

in Hauppauge.

The Nassau center will be open seven days a week, while the Suffolk center will be closed on Sundays.

FEMA recommends that individuals seeking assistance register at 800-621-FEMA (800-621-3362) or 800-462-7585 (TTY) before visiting the centers. Applicants also may register at DisasterAssistance.gov or m.fema.gov.

Registrants will be asked for the address of the damaged property, names and Social Security numbers of those in the household, a description of the damage and any insurance coverage.

Representatives from the Small Business Administration will be at the centers to explain low-interest loan packages for the repair or replacement of real estate and personal property damaged.
