2013 softball players to watch
ALANNAH BASILE
Island Trees, P, Jr.
Has added velocity and expanded her repertoire after going 18-3 with a 1.46 ERA while leading Island Trees to the county championship series.
MICHELLE CARBONE
St. Anthony's, P/1B, Sr.
The four-year varsity starter is committed to Stonehill College. She was a second team All-Long Island right-hander.
KIERSTEN CARLOMAGNO
Commack, P, Sr.
The right-hander was named the 2012 League I Pitcher of the Year due to her ability to overpower opponents.
FRANCESCA CASALINO
Half Hollow Hills West, P Jr.
Returning All-Long Island second-team.
SARAH CORNELL
Clarke, P, Fr.
Nearly lead Clarke to the county finals as an eighth-grader with her overpowering fastball. She’s now consistently throwing over 60 MPH and has improved her off-speed pitches.
JENA COZZA
MacArthur, SS, Sr.
The U-Mass bound shortstop, who hit .419 with five homers and 24 RBIs last season, can hit from either side of the plate out of the leadoff spot and is as sure-handed as they come in the field for the defending Long Island champs.
SABRINA DEANGELIS
Kellenberg, P/2B, Sr.
DeAngelis takes over in the circle for last year's Pitcher of the Year, Susan Pardo.
MICHELLE DEVITO
Bay Shore, P, Sr.
Returns as the Suffolk Large School pitcher of the year for good reason. Finished 19-1 with a 1.32 ERA, 157 strikeouts in 111 innings and batted .406 with only one strikeout in 69 at-bats.
DOLORES DIEMICKE
Plainedge, 1B, Sr.
Nothing gets by the second-team All-Long Island first baseman. Her defensive ability, along with her run production, helped guide Plainedge to a county title.
DANIELLE GARIGLIO
Massapequa, SS, Sr.
The switch-hitting shortstop, who made second-team All-Long Island last season, will be a catalyst atop the lineup. Also has good range and a strong arm at short.
CHELSEA HAWKS
Shoreham-Wading River, P, Sr.
The curveball and screwball are two key pitching strengths. Helped lead the Wildcats to a 14-6 overall record and 13-6 League VI finish in the 2012 regular season.
SHELBY HEYWARD
East Islip, 1B, Sr.
Returning All-County player that led the Redmen in hitting with 45 hits, a .474 average and 31 RBI in 2012.
KAITLIN HOFFMANN
St. John The Baptist, 1B, Sr.
Expected to anchor the Cougars' defense behind junior pitcher Sofia Evangelista.
KRISTA KING
Kellenberg, 2B, Jr.
King, a returning second-team All-Long Island selection, will make an impact at the top of the Firebirds' order.
NOEL LENT
Longwood, SS/P, Sr.
Leads the Lions' well-rounded ball club as the defending League I champions.
ASHLEY MARTIN
Long Beach, P, Sr.
The second team All-Long Island selection is a power pitcher with a fastball and curveball that will keep Long Beach in contention.
KAYLA MCCOY
Smithtown West, SS/1B, Sr.
The League III Player of the Year also took home second-team All-Long Island honors in 2012. Committed to LIU Post.
CARLY MERTENS
Baldwin, P, Sr.
The two-time second-team All-Long Island selection has been among the county leaders in home runs the past two seasons and has a great screwball in the circle.
GIANA PANARIELLO
Bay Shore, SS, Sr.
Named a second-team All-Long Island shortstop after batting .500, with nine doubles, two triples, three homers, 17 RBI, 14 BB and 33 runs scored out of the leadoff spot last season. Committed to Harvard.
AILEEN REILLY
St. Anthony's, P, Jr.
All-League returnee gives the Friars a 1-1A punch in the circle with Carbone.
SABRINA RILEY
Deer Park, SS, Sr.
Two-time second-team All-Long Island, two-time All-County, and last season's fourth team All-State. Headed to Le Moyne.
COURTNEY SYRETT
Bay Shore, C, Sr.
An all-around threat in the field and at the plate. Batted .553 with six home runs, 30 RBIs and 18 walks. Committed to Ole Miss.
TORI TEDESCHI
Island Trees, 3B, Sr.
The second-team All-Long Island selection will be one of the main run producers, and a vacuum at third, for top-seeded Island Trees.
MADISON WEST
East Meadow, C, Jr.
Arguably the best defensive backstop in the county, the second-team All-Long Island selection is also a dangerous line-drive hitter with power.
