Bummed about the weather today? At least it's not Hurricane Gloria.
On Sept. 27, 1985, 25 years ago today, the Category 3 storm made landfall near Long Beach.
According to the cover of the Sept. 28, 1985 Newsday, 400,000 lost power.
In fact, 750,000 wound up being in the dark, some for days, as the response to the crisis of the Long Island Power Authority predecessor LILCO was sharply criticized.
With the New York City region now overdue for a major hurricane, experts are worried that Long Islanders have grown complacent and wouldn't be ready for a Gloria-like storm.
Would you be ready?! Nassau Red Cross tweeted a link to its Long Island Hurricane Preparedness resources earlier Monday. You can follow Nassau Red Cross here, and follow Newsday here.
