Still sweating on the Fourth
The heat and humidity that has forced anyone outside for even a few minutes to sweat will drop only a few degrees Saturday when scores of Long Islanders are expected to congregate outdoors for barbecues and bombastic aerial pyrotechnics.
The high temperature recorded in Islip on Friday was 96 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, no sweat compared to the 104 degrees Long Islanders endured on July 3, 1966. Temperatures are expected to soar not quite as high on Saturday, but still into the low 90s.
The hottest Independence Days on record — when temps hit 97 degrees in Islip — were measured in 1966 and 2010. With the humidity, Saturday could feel around 105 degrees for anyone outside barbequing under the afternoon sun or lounging poolside.
