3 dead, 3 hurt in Brooklyn car crash

Three people were killed and three others injured in a car crash early Saturday morning in Brooklyn, New York City police said.

Leonora Lavaud, 24, and Andre Capers-Jones, 26, both of Brooklyn, died after the 2009 Toyota Camry they were riding in was broadsided by a 2003 Acura running a red light about 2 a.m., police said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of East Fifth Street and Avenue U, police said.

The driver of the Acura was also killed, police said. His name has not been released.

Three passengers riding in the Acura were rushed to Lutheran Medical Center. One man was listed in critical condition, while two female passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Nine vehicles, including a city bus, were damaged, police said.

The investigation is continuing, police said. It's not yet clear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
