3 Suffolk beaches closed to swimmers
As the heat continues, here's a quick beach and swimming update:
- What's closed? Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Sayville Marina Park Beach in Sayville. Also, Tides Beach in Rocky Point is still closed.
- What reopened? Ronkonkoma Beach on Rosevale Avenue in Ronkonkoma has reopened.
- Why do beaches close? Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat, according to Suffolk County Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott.
- When will they reopen? The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
