The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons has brought 30 breeder dogs from puppy mills in Missouri to Long Island, 20 to the ARF shelter in East Hampton and 10 to the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton.

Both are no-kill shelters, and the animals are being examined by a vet and treated for any problems such as damaged teeth or injured feet from living in wire cages. They will then be neutered and put up for adoption.

It is the sixth puppy mill rescue by ARF this year.

The dogs were brought to Long Island by a group of volunteer drivers, the Rescue Road Warriors. They volunteer their time, and ARF --  which had a budget of nearly $3 million in 2012 -- pays for their gas.

According to ARF, recent changes in the law requiring breeders who sell puppies on the Internet to be licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are expected to result in more puppy mill dogs being cast off.
