5,000 pounds of trash removed from Asharoken wetlands, shore

More than 5,000 pounds of trash were removed from wetlands and shorelines in the Asharoken area during the village’s annual coast cleanup, officials said.

More than 200 volunteers participated in the event held on Sept. 28, filling two Dumpsters with debris. Volunteers were given the option of cleaning Steers, Asharoken, Hobart and Crab Meadow beaches, as well as the Asharoken shore, according to a village statement. The Duck Island Harbor wetlands were also cleaned more thoroughly than in the past, with the Town of Huntington’s assistance, the statement said.

Some of the items removed included a large boat rudder, a marine sign and a marine engine. The Dumpsters were supplied by Huntington, the statement said.
