50-mile relay run set for Sunday

About 1,000 runners are expected to compete Sunday in the 26th annual Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay, on a course winding 50 miles from Jones Beach to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay.
The race’s eight legs will cross 15 hamlets and villages in two counties, beginning in Wantagh before traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, Huntington, Lloyd Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset, Oyster Bay Cove and Oyster Bay.
Proceeds from the event, which begins at 7 a.m. and ends with an awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m., benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Runners of note include Leonara Petrina, who is training to be an Olympic steeplechaser, Peter Hawkins, one of the region’s top wheelchair athletes, and Eva Casale, a Glen Cove woman running all 50 miles alone.
