The fifth annual Long Island Run for the Warriors race will take place Saturday in Babylon Town.

The event, sponsored by the town, is billed as a 10K, 5K, 1-mile run/walk and is intended to honor soldiers who were wounded or died in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their families.

This year’s event has raised more than $100,000 so far, with a goal of reaching $125,000. All proceeds benefit Hope For The Warriors, a national nonprofit with multiple programs that aim to improve the quality of life for post-9/11 service members and their families.

Opening ceremonies will kick off at Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst at 9 a.m. The 5K run will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 10K at 9:45 a.m. and the 1 mile run/walk at 10 a.m. Following the event, which ends at Town Hall, there will be an awards ceremony.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers in 5-year age categories. There also will be team awards.

Participants are encouraged to register online or during preregistration tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m. Same-day registration will begin Saturday at 7 a.m. and will close at 8:45 a.m. An additional charge of $5 will be added for all same-day registrations.

General registration is $25, $15 for veterans and $10 for students ages 11 to 18. The event is free for children 10 and under and for all active and wounded military members, their spouses and children.
