6 injured in Verazzano Bridge crash

An MTA exec led a rescue effort to pull two people out of a burning truck yesterday after an accident on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that left six people injured during the morning rush, officials said.

MTA executive James Fortunato happened to be crossing the bridge at the time of the accident and, along with two Bridge and Tunnel officers and other helpers on the bridge, pulled out the driver and a passenger of a box truck that rear-ended a garbage truck and got pinned up against the bridge's railing, the MTA said.

"It was just happenstance that I was there," Fortunato said.

"Our employees are the real heroes. This is what they are trained to do and they did it well," he said.

The passenger of the box truck was hospitalized in critical condition, along with the truck's driver and three other victims of the accident, reports said.

Fortunato and Bridge and Tunnel Officer Jimmy Moy were both taken to Staten Island University Hospital.

They were treated at the hospital and released.
