The Shoreham Civic Organization meeting on Nov. 17 will feature a presentation on plans for a 9/11 memorial to be constructed at the Rocky Point fire house and a discussion about a proposed cell phone tower in Shoreham.

Tom Logan, chairman for the 9/11 memorial project, will attend the meeting to present preliminary designs for the structure, which will be built at the fire house on Route 25A in Shoreham. The memorial will be constructed from a 16-foot steel I-beam taken from the World Trade Center and delivered to the firehouse in September.

“Up until this point, no one has been exactly sure what it might look like,” SCO president Rich Belsky said of the project, which was initially spearheaded by SCO and taken over by members of the Rocky Point Fire Department.

He said though SCO is no longer involved in constructing the memorial, he asked Logan to make a presentation at the meeting so the community could provide input on the plans before construction begins.

For the same reason, Belsky said, he asked a representative from T-Mobile to attend the meeting to discuss a proposed cell phone tower on property owned by DeLalio Sod Farms. The tower would be located at either the sod farm across from the Shoreham Plaza on Route 25A or at the golf course at the Tallgrass Country Club on Cooper Street.

Belsky said that a formal application to the town for the cell tower has not been filed. He said by working with the civic group so early on, the company is “doing it very right.”

“This is really important,” he said. “We get the community involved before the project is even up on the drawing board to see if the community would embrace it. If there are any concerns, let’s get them aired out before there is any money involved.”

The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Miller Avenue Elementary School.
