Destry's Michelle DaRosa wanted a band of her own.

It's an understandable ambition, considering the Baldwin native got her start with her brother, John Nolan, in Straylight Run, and she's married to Jeff DaRosa of Dropkick Murphys.

"With Straylight Run, even though I was always in the band, it was always my brother's band to me," she says. "This is my thing."

Destry's new album "Waiting on an Island" is filled with the sunny vocals she brought to Straylight Run, surrounded with a more retro vibe, thanks to guitarist Tyler Odom and the restrained drumming of former Straylight bandmate Will Noon.

Although the pretty "This Island" and upbeat "Gone" would fit nicely next to other '60s-loving rockers like The Belle Brigade and Jenny and Johnny, DaRosa laughs when asked if she thought Destry was part of a growing retro-influenced indie movement. "I actually haven't heard any of those bands," she says. "We just really like that late '50s-early '60s retro-pop sound. We really like the Everly Brothers."

DaRosa says she's ready to head out on tour with Destry to support "Waiting on an Island," hopefully opening for bigger bands rather than headlining themselves. "We just want to give it a really good effort," she says. "It's a record we're really proud of."

And DaRosa is set to do what she can to get people to hear it. "The degree that I'm working on this is really different," she says, laughing. "Right now, there's a button machine on my table. I have to make 500 buttons before we go on tour. I've never done that before."

Destry plays Bar Matchless, 557 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn, 718-383-5333, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $8.
