A different kind of icing: Cupcakes come to Coliseum
What do you like to eat at sporting events? Hot dogs, pizza, nachos, of course. How about cupcakes?
The cream-filled delights aren't the usual offerings at stadiums, but they will be on sale at Nassau Coliseum this fall when the New York Islanders take to the ice. The hockey team has for the first time named an official cupcake supplier, Amy Brady, owner of Cupcake Gourmet on Gerard Street in Huntington Village.
Brady, 44, is a part-time professional trainer who began baking cupcakes at her Huntington Station home three years ago for parties and weddings. She opened the store in March 2008. She said Islander players visited her shop and loved her cupcakes.
Last year, Brady said, she went to an Islanders game and found no cupcakes on sale. "I decided I would have to be the one" to supply them, she said.
Brady got in touch with Islanders management and a deal was struck. She will supply all events at the Coliseum.
"We can bake for 24 hours" if need be, Brady said of herself and her three-member staff at the tiny store. "I can bake 240 cupcakes in a half an hour. We can meet the demand."
Brady hasn't set a price but said the Coliseum cupcakes will likely be priced higher than the $2.50 she charges at her shop. She said she will offer her red velvets, cocoa cupcakes with vanilla cream cheese frosting, rainbow cupcakes, and of course, cupcakes with the Islanders colors: orange, blue and white.
From now on, if icing is mentioned at hockey games it won't necessarily refer to the puck.
