A jersey boy
For the first time in school district history, Sachem is retiring the jersey of a lacrosse player. Doug Shanahan (Class of ’97), will have his No. 26 retired at halftime of Monday night’s Sachem North home game against Ward Melville. The game starts at 7 p.m.
Shanahan, whose college jersey was retired by Hofstra last year, was a three-year varsity starter at Sachem (before the district split), As a senior, he earned All-County, All-Long Island, All-State and All-American honors while leading the Flaming Arrows to the state championship. He scored 75 goals with 40 assists in his high school career.
At Hofstra, he was a four-year starter and three-time All-American. After an eight-year professional lacrosse career, Shanahan now coaches high school boys lacrosse in Florida.
