It’s college commencement time. The LIRR strike could make it more difficult for students and families to attend these ceremonies.

Hofstra, which has a graduation scheduled for today, has alerted families on its website and social media that the drive is expected to be a tough one. They urged people to leave more time for travel and to look at alternative transportation options.

Stony Brook said it expects to see a 30% to 40% increase in campus vehicle traffic for commencement events beginning today and suggested that graduates and guests carpool when possible.

Some Stony Brook employees may be able to work remotely, pending approval by their bosses, the website said. Employees who are required, "by operational need to report in person are expected to make any necessary arrangements to ensure timely arrival at their designated worksite," it said.

Class instructors were "strongly urged to immediately adjust plans" for final exams and presentations.
