A travel tips site to check before you go
Autumn may be setting in, but that doesn't mean travel time is over. In fact, with the summer rush left behind, the weather still favorable and the prices off-peak, this is one of the best times to go abroad.
If you've never traveled outside of the United States -- or even if you have -- the U.S. State Department's Tips for Traveling Abroad site is a wealth of information.
It is useful in both preparing for your journey and while you are away. Some helpful links to check beforehand include those on applying and renewing passports and obtaining visas; needed vaccinations and updates on infectious diseases; traveling with pets; marriage, divorce, adoption or the birth of a child abroad; absentee voting overseas; driving in other countries; and planning considerations for the elderly, students and those with disabilities.
Make sure to keep the State Department's website with you after you depart, as well. The Medical Information for Americans Abroad section provides invaluable links for how to find doctors or medical evacuation should you or a member of your party fall ill. You can also learn about customs restrictions and, perhaps, most important, what to do in an emergency.
